About

I’ve sat in both chairs: the one where the buck stops, and the one where the truth comes out.

For twenty years I’ve been an operator. Multi-unit quick-service restaurants. Fuel. A commercial real estate portfolio with tenants, roofs, and renewals. Payroll every two weeks, whether or not I felt like a leader that morning. I know what a business does to the person holding it — because mine did it to me.

That’s what sent me back to school in my forties. I trained as a therapist, and for the past six years I’ve practiced as a Registered Psychotherapist in Manitoba, Canada, working with high performers whose inner lives were quietly running — and sometimes ruining — their outer ones. Along the way I wrote the From Chaos to Calm series: four books on anger, anxiety, and the work of leading yourself first.

Why this work, and not the other kind

I could teach you to run a tighter company. That’s the easier sale, and for a while it’s what this page said.

But I’ve watched what happens to men who win. I’ve watched it in my own family — the ones who built something real and then kept building, past the point where anyone needed them to, because stopping meant meeting a question they had no language for. I’ve watched wealth arrive in a family and do damage nobody planned for. I’ve watched a man sell the thing he spent his life making and go straight back to work on Monday, because the alternative was silence. I’m related to some of them. I’ve been some of them.

Nobody gave them the words. That’s most of what went wrong — not a lack of character or intelligence or love, just no language for the passage they were in, and so they read it as failure and did the only thing they knew: more.

Giving people those words is what I actually care about. Everything on this site comes out of that.

How I work

Therapy, done well, is mostly listening. Coaching is a different job. In coaching I’ve walked the road, I know the terrain, and my work is to hand you the map and say: this is the way — walk in it. Then I stay on the sideline, where a coach belongs, because you’re the one playing. I’ll be direct with you, and I’ll tell you when I think you’re lying to yourself. That’s what you’re paying for.

The work is informed by Internal Family Systems, alongside the map of the two halves of life drawn by Richard Rohr, Carl Jung, and Irvin Yalom — and twenty years of meeting payroll. Practical, direct, and aimed at the question underneath the performance. No incense. No hustle.

I live in Manitoba, Canada with my family, and work with clients across the United States and Canada by video.

Coaching is not psychotherapy, counselling, or mental-health treatment, and no therapist–client relationship is created. Scott Johannson is a Registered Psychotherapist in Manitoba, Canada; he does not practice psychotherapy in the United States. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (US) or 9-8-8 (Canada).
